20 Home Drinking Games to Turn a Cocktail Night Into an Actual Party

From elegant to gloriously chaotic - 20 drinking games to play at home, from classic card games to modern party favorites. How each one works, and how to host it well.

You made the cocktails. The glasses look great. And then everyone stands around holding them, waiting for something to happen. A good drinking game is the something. It's the difference between "we had drinks" and "remember that night?"

Here are 20 to keep in your back pocket - from low-key and clever to gloriously loud - with a one-line how-to for each. (First, the grown-up bit: these are for adults, drink responsibly, keep water on the table, and no game is worth anyone feeling unwell. Now, the fun.)

Card & table classics

  1. Kings (Ring of Fire) - Spread cards around a can; each card drawn triggers a rule. The whole party in one deck.
  2. Ride the Bus - Guess red/black, higher/lower, in/out, and suit; guess wrong and you drink.
  3. Pyramid - A pyramid of cards; call bluffs on who holds a match. Lying encouraged.
  4. Sevens (Up and Down the River) - Deal cards; sevens and doubles assign drinks. Fast and merciless.
  5. Screw the Dealer - Guess the card the dealer flips; the closer you get, the fewer you drink.

Dice games

  1. Three Man - Roll doubles, sums, and the dreaded "3"; one player becomes the Three Man and drinks on every 3.
  2. Mexico - Roll for the highest number; lowest drinks. One roll, high stakes.
  3. Ship, Captain, Crew - Roll to collect a 6, 5, and 4 in order. Nautical and surprisingly tense.

Word & memory games

  1. Never Have I Ever - Say something you haven't done; anyone who has drinks. Secrets guaranteed.
  2. Most Likely To - "Who's most likely to..."; everyone points, and you drink per finger aimed at you.
  3. Categories - Pick a category, go around naming items; hesitate or repeat and you drink.
  4. Fuzzy Duck - Say "fuzzy duck" around the circle; a "does he?" reverses direction. Descends into chaos fast.
  5. Buzz - Count aloud, replacing multiples of 7 with "buzz." Sounds easy. It isn't.
  6. Two Truths and a Lie - Tell three "facts"; the group drinks if they guess the lie wrong.

Cup & aim games

  1. Beer Pong - The classic: land a ball in a cup, they drink and remove it. (Cocktail version: use smaller cups and mixers.)
  2. Flip Cup - Team relay: drink, then flip the empty cup upright with a finger. Loud, fast, competitive.
  3. Quarters - Bounce a coin off the table into a glass. Deceptively hard after round two.

Party favorites

  1. Drunk Jenga - Write a rule or dare on each block; whatever you pull, you do. Set it up once, play all night.
  2. Power Hour - One sip every minute for an hour (best with a small pour). A playlist makes it.
  3. Medusa - Everyone looks down, then up at someone; lock eyes with the same person and you both drink. Pure nerve.

Host it well

The games are the fun; the setup is what makes you the host people remember. A few tips:

  • Have a signature batch ready. A pre-mixed batched cocktail means you're playing too, not stuck making drinks all night.
  • Small pours for game drinks. The point is laughs, not casualties - little sips keep the night long.
  • Good glass, good ice, water on the table. The basics still matter, even at a party.

The takeaway

A great cocktail gets the night started; a great game keeps it going. Keep a handful of these ready - a card classic, a dice game, one loud cup game - batch a signature drink so you can play too, and keep the pours small and the water flowing.

Do that, and you're not the person who served drinks. You're the one who threw the party. Drink well, and look after each other.
